Wyoming work runs on energy and minerals, and most of it happens far from town. The Powder River Basin in the northeast is the state's leading oil basin, and the Greater Green River Basin in the southwest, home to the Pinedale and Jonah fields, is its top natural gas basin. The Powder River Basin is also one of the country's biggest coal regions.
In Sweetwater County, near Green River, sits the world's largest known trona deposit. Trona is mined and processed into soda ash, and the Green River area supplies about 90 percent of the nation's soda ash, according to the Bureau of Land Management. Add the power plants, pipelines and gas processing that support all of it, and there is steady demand for crews that can show up safe and documented.
What that means for your paperwork
Many oil and gas operators, mines, pipelines and utilities ask contractors to qualify through a platform like ISNetworld, Avetta or Veriforce before work starts. Each client sets its own requirements, so a hot shot or roustabout outfit in Gillette and a fabrication shop in Rock Springs can face very different checklists.
- Mine sites often expect written programs that fit mining work, not a generic oilfield binder
- Crews that move between oil, gas and trona work may need accounts on more than one platform
- Long winters and spread out work make it easy for a yearly update to slip until a client flags it
- Insurance certificates need to show the coverage each client requires, not just what you carry
State prequalification is a separate thing
If you also bid public work, the Wyoming Department of Transportation has its own prequalification process through its iCX system for highway and building projects. That is separate from the private platforms operators use. Being qualified in one does not count for the other, so it pays to know which one each client is actually asking for.
