Most of Colorado's oil comes from the Denver-Julesburg Basin, usually called the DJ Basin, in the northeast part of the state. Weld County, home of the Wattenberg Field, produces nearly 90 percent of Colorado's crude oil. On the Western Slope, the Piceance Basin around Garfield and Rio Blanco Counties is mostly natural gas country, and La Plata County in the southwest is another major gas producer.
Around that production there is work in pipelines, gas processing, utilities and construction. Colorado oil and gas activity is overseen by the state's Energy and Carbon Management Commission.
