A lot of Utah's contract work is tied to the Uinta Basin in the northeast, around Duchesne and Uintah Counties, where most of the state's crude oil is produced. Uinta crude is known as waxy crude. It turns semi-solid at normal outdoor temperatures, so it has to be heated in the field and hauled in insulated trucks, and much of it goes to the five refineries just north of Salt Lake City. Some is moved to rail terminals for out of state markets.
That creates work well beyond the wellsite: hauling, heated storage, transloading, refinery maintenance and turnarounds. Utah also has production in the Paradox Basin in the southeast and the central Utah fields, along with mining, power generation and large construction projects along the Wasatch Front.
What that means for your paperwork
Many operators, refiners, utilities and large industrial sites ask their contractors to qualify through ISNetworld, Avetta or Veriforce. Each one sets its own requirements, and they do not always match.
- Trucking and hauling outfits may get asked about driver, vehicle and DOT related programs as well as general safety programs
- A contractor working both the Basin and the Wasatch Front can end up with several clients, each checking a different list
- Insurance certificates have to meet each client's limits and wording, and they lapse on their own schedule
State prequalification is a separate thing
If you also bid state building projects, Utah's Division of Facilities Construction and Management runs its own contractor prequalification, with renewal every 18 months. That is a separate system from the private platforms operators and plants use, so a current state prequal does not keep your ISNetworld, Avetta or Veriforce account current.
